Hi there,
I have type 1 diabetes and I was wondering how do you lose weight and sustain your weight if you have to have carbohydrates in your regular diet.
Is this a normal problem with people with type 1 diabetes?
Also, what are some good healthy recipes for people with diabetes?
Thank you.

I find that if I exercise more, I need to decrease my insulin requirements to avoid constant hypo’s and therefore can eat less carbohydrates.
My advice would be to see your doctor and tell them that you intend on exercising more and what is their advice on your insulin requirements? Most likely you will have to decrease insulin and monitor your BGLs closely. If you take less insulin and exercise more, you’ll find that you can eat healthy foods such as lots of fruits and vegetables, wholegrain breads and cereals and lean meats, chicken and fish for protein; the best diet for people with diabetes is known as a low glycaemic index diet. You can find a lot of info about it on the internet or in bookstores.

The best way you can achieve this is to consult with your endocrinologist and a dietician who will come up with a plan that’s specifically tailored to your needs.
