I’m a 22 year old female who has nearly all of the classic symptoms of type-1 Diabetes (fatigue, extreme thirst, frequent urination, etc.) I have always heard that those that suspect that they have type-1 Diabetes usually experience unintentional weight loss. However, I’m experiencing unintentional weight gain! I’ve gained around 10 pounds, which is strange. Although I’m already overweight (which I know puts me at risk), I’m a vegetarian and I eat and exercise moderately; it’s not like I’m constantly snacking or eating mostly unhealthy things. Any thoughts, yahoo community?

    Being overweight puts you at risk for Type 2 diabetes, not Type 1. The vast majority of Type 1′s were of normal weight when their beta cells gave out. Ask your doc for a glucose check, or buy an inexpensive blood glucose meter at the drugstore (like One Touch Mini) and check yourself a couple of mornings before eating or exercising. If the number is over 100, see your doctor.

    Type 1 or Insulin-Dependency Diabetes

    The symptoms of Type 1 Diabetes include:
    * Weight loss
    * Excessive thirst
    * Muscle wasting
    * Frequent urination
    * Laboratory tests reveal large amounts of sugar in the urine

    gaining weight is not a symptoms of diabetes. so i dont know what to tell you…
