I’m wondering if I’ve inherited diabetes from my aunt. My aunt was diagnost with diabetes when she was a freshman in college, I’m wondering if theres a way for me to know now, I’m 16.
thanks!

The only way to know if you have diabetes is to have your blood glucose checked. The symptoms of type 1 diabetes are most often obvious rather than subtle. Increased appetite, decreased weight, increased thirst, increased urination, and feeling quite ill. If you have access to a glucometer – for example your Aunt – why not check you fasting glucose to reassure yourself. A fasting glucose should be less than 100 mg/dL or 5.6 mmol/L. I wish you the very best of health and in all things may God bless.

You can’t “inherit” diabetes it is not a family heirloom. If anyone in your family has Type 2 Diabetes then you have a higher risk of getting that disease. Type 1 is an auto-immune disease, this means that your body attacks itself. In Type 1 your pancreas stops working entirely (does not produce any insulin) and it is caused by a virus. In Type 2 Diabetes, your pancreas does not produce enough insulin for your body to use (commonly because you are overweight, not always the case though) but your pancreas still works. So, the symptoms of type 1 diabetes are blurred vision, feeling extremely thirsty, increased appetite, urinating frequently (waking up to urinate), feeling sluggish, mood changes, and weight loss.
