There are theories that a viral infection can preceed the onset of type 1 diabetes – but there is no "knee virus" out there. You could have diabetes, and have some viral synovitis, or inflamation of the knee joint -

    I’m not sure but many forms of diabetes hinder the body’s ability to ward off infection. Also, most diabetics heal slower… insulin has some relationship to metabolism. If your son is active in sports he may need to focus on those activities that don’t put a lot of stress on the knees.
