All of the folks that I know who have diabetes (insulin dependent) are obese. They are not just a few pounds over, but rather at very unhealthy weights. Is this normal?
Short answer:
Type I- NO
Type II-YES – a combination of genetics and insulin resistance causes the pancreas to slow production of insulin and sometimes stop producing.
Repost if you need more specifics.

Yes and it’s often diet related.
I.e. obese people who have eaten bad diets high in fats and sugars (maccas, kfc, donuts) all their life are prone to diabetes.
You can lose your toes/feet/legs from diabetes.

yes there is. The islets of langerhans on the pancreas can’t produce enough insulin. Ther is also a kind of diabetes that isn’t caused from obesity. It is called juvenile diabetes.

obesity may be associated with diabetes and may not.
diabetic patients may have greater possibility to be obese, while an obese person not neccessarily a diabetic patient.
there are diabetic patients who are not obese, I ‘ve found some of them are skinny too.

Something about beng overweight sometimes results in the body organs being unable to produce enough insulin. If left uncheck type 2 diabetes may result.
However, there are overweight people without diabetes so there are other factors involved. Type 1 diabetes is an entirely different thing.

Type I diabetics can be obese due to insulin preventing them from burning fat efficiently.
Type II diabetics are generally obese before they are diagnosed/become diabetics and many do nothing to fix the problem after.
