Diabetes mellitus is a group of metabolic diseases characterized by high blood sugar (glucose) levels, that result from defects in insulin secretion, or action, or both. Diabetes mellitus, commonly referred to as diabetes (as it will be in this article) was first identified as a disease associated with “sweet urine,” and excessive muscle loss in the ancient world. Elevated levels of blood glucose (hyperglycemia) lead to spillage of glucose into the urine, hence the term sweet urine.

Patients with uncontrolled diabetes mellitus may urinate excessively (polyuria) and become thirsty because the glucose filtered into the kidneys has the tendency to pull water with it. They may experience increased appetite and weight loss; the absence of functioning insulin prevents cells from obtaining the carbohydrates they need and allows muscle and fat to break down. Muscle cramping and fatigue may also occur.

Types of diabetes

The two main types of diabetes are type 1 diabetes and type 2 diabetes.
Type 1 diabetes usually occurs in children and young adults and is considered an autoimmune disease. An autoimmune disease results when the body’s system for fighting infection (the immune system) turns against a part of the body.

A combination of abnormalities is responsible for type 2 diabetes. The first is probably insulin resistance, a condition in which body cells become less responsive to insulin. Therefore, the body must secrete more insulin to maintain normal metabolism. Insulin resistance, which is very common, doesn’t cause type 2 diabetes by itself.

.

Gestational Diabetes is a form of Type 2 diabetes that begins during pregnancy, often near the end of the second trimester or during the third trimester. It is caused by the hormones of pregnancy or by a shortage of insulin. It affects 7% of all pregnancies and over 200,000 women a year in the U.S. Although this form of diabetes tends to go away after the baby is born, type 2 diabetes is more likely later in life.

Pre-Diabetes

Before people develop type 2 diabetes, they almost always have pre-diabetes; blood glucose (sugar) levels that are higher than normal but not yet high enough to be diagnosed as diabetes. People with pre-diabetes are at increased risk for developing type 2 diabetes and for having heart disease and stroke. Many people are unaware that they have pre-diabetes, because it usually has no symptoms.

There are different diabetes types to be aware of, especially if you think that you may be at risk for developing diabetes. Here is a brief overview of the most commonly-experienced Diabetes Mellitus types:

Type 1 diabetes mellitus:

Very rarely is seen amongst those older than 30 years of age. It is most prevalent in children and young adults between 10 and 17; Has no definitive causes although it is believed to be caused by genetic predisposition and or a virus. Other possible cause include infections, high fevers and bacterium; Is also called “insulin-dependent” diabetes mellitus because insulin injections are always one part of the treatment plan; Is incurable currently although research continues for pancreatic Islet replacement surgeries and other possible cures; Accounts for roughly 10% of all diabetes mellitus cases;

Gestational diabetes mellitus:

Develops in women during the later stages of pregnancy. Develops in women who have otherwise been diabetes-free all of their lives; Is effectively controllable and reversible in most cases through healthy dieting and exercise alone; Almost always goes completely away after delivery; Is caused by poor dietary choices and sedentary living in over 85% of cases;

Type 2 diabetes mellitus:

Accounts for roughly 90% of all cases of diabetes mellitus; Has seen a more than 76% increase since 1990; Is caused almost in every case by improper dietary choices, poor eating habits and lacking exercise standards; Is effectively controllable and many times reversible through positive changes in diet and exercise; Is very often seen in people who are overweight and/or obese; Is almost 100% preventable;

The different diabetes types all have one thing in common: they are greatly lessened in severity when combated with a healthy water-rich diet and daily physical movement. Over 25 percent of all Americans have been labeled as being completely sedentary. We have become the fattest and laziest nation on the planet here in the US and the all-time record-high disease rates are showing that clearly.

In addition to the more than 15 million reported cases of diabetes mellitus currently in the US, there are also more than 57 million people who are believed to have pre diabetes. Moreover, there are an additional one million plus new cases of diabetes mellitus reported annually in the US alone.

Given that the main causes of diabetes mellitus are poor dietary and lacking exercise standards, one needs only to initiate a healthy type 2 diabetes diet and get daily exercise for about a half an hour in order to cease the development in most cases. Take the initiative and act today to alleviate the development of diabetes mellitus before you have to.

Today is your chance to turn your life around and begin living the vibrantly-healthful life that you have always dreamed about. It is a joyous experience to know that every day you are getting stronger and more vital. Thwart the development of all diabetes types with positive lifestyle enhancements beginning right now!

Diabetes can be briefly explained as a metabolic syndrome where the human body is unable to absorb and utilize its main source of fuel even though the blood contains large amounts of glucose. This occurs when the body is unable to produce or properly use insulin, a hormone that is required to convert glucose into energy.

This is the most severe form of diabetes. It develops when pancreas makes little or no insulin. Without insulin in the blood stream, sugar does not get into the cells, and remains in the blood. People with type-1 diabetes depend on injections of insulin to regulate their smaller metabolism.

Type 1 Diabetes is often a genetic disease and at times also caused by environmental factors. In this antibodies are produced within the patient’s body that destroys the cells responsible for producing insulin. As the insulin production is reduced or stopped Glucose level goes up. Insulin injections are required to treat this type of diabetes.

To understand Type 1 Diabetes, you first need to understand that the body produces insulin primarily in the islet cells of the pancreas. This disease process is commonly seen early in life, because it is a failure of a system in the body. It may be seen at any age, however. There are some noted cases of pancreas damage from infections, toxic conditions or injury that have produced this diagnosis, but most cases are considered developmental or genetic. For this reason, newer treatments being utilized involve replacement of the failed systems by pancreas or islet cell transplants.

Type 2 is more commonly known as non-insulin dependent diabetes. In the cases of type 2 patients production of insulin is still possible but in variable ways: it is either produced to much or in quantities not big enough for the body’s needs. The action of the disease tends to start in the muscle cells and fat cells , slowly but gradually making a bad effect on the liver to. This in particular, besides the fact that there is insufficient insulin in the body, produces glucose even if levels are quite hi.

To further understand Type 2 Diabetes, it must be therefore understood that the body either fails to produce enough insulin or the cells react poorly (or ignore) the insulin. When a food is eaten, the body utilizes insulin to break down sugar (glucose), starches or other foods into energy for the cells. If the cells fail to absorb the necessary energy (due toinsufficient or poorly functioning insulin), the blood sugar increases and the cells are starved for energy.

Both types of diabetes require that the patient maintain normal blood glucose levels in an effort to reduce the possibility of organ damage, including eyesight, kidney, blood circulation, etc. In order for this to occur, patients must carefully monitor their food intake and make sure to participate in regular exercise, all the while continuing to monitor their blood glucose level.

Diabetes is a metabolic disease that is caused when the pancreas does not produce enough insulin to naturally turn sugars ingested into your body into energy. There are three major types of diabetes.

Type-1 Diabetes

This type of diabetes is an autoimmune disease – which is a result of the body’s failure to fight infection. As a result, the body begins to attack its own cells – in this case the beta cells in the pancreas that produce insulin. The body destroys the beta cells and no insulin is produced. People with type-1 diabetes have to take insulin shots daily in order to live.

The causes of type-1 diabetes are not known, however autoimmune, genetic, and environmental factors are believed to play a role in the onset of type-1 diabetes. This type of diabetes can affect people of any age, but most often is found in children and young adults. Symptoms of type-1 diabetes include increased thirst and urination, constant hunger, blurred vision, unexplained weight loss, and fatigue. An early diagnosis of type-1 diabetes is very important. Without daily injections of insulin, a person with this type of diabetes is at a high risk of lapsing into a diabetic coma, a life-threatening condition.

Type-2 Diabetes

This type of diabetes is the most common type. Type-2 diabetes usually affects adults who are obese, have a family history of diabetes, or have a previous history of gestational diabetes. Type-2 diabetes is not caused by the body’s inability to produce insulin, but rather by the body’s inability to use the insulin it creates effectively. This causes the blood to have higher levels of sugars than normal.

The symptoms of type-2 diabetes include frequent thirst and urination, nausea, unexplained weight loss, frequent infections, wounds and sores heal slowly, and fatigue.

This type of diabetes can often be prevented or controlled with certain lifestyle changes, including a healthy diet and regular exercise. Some patients need to take medications and many use natural treatments to effectively control the symptoms of type-2 diabetes.

Gestational Diabetes

This type of diabetes occurs in pregnant women and is caused by an intolerance to carbohydrates, which causes blood sugar levels to increase. It is very important for a woman who has gestational diabetes to control the disease in order to prevent the baby from being affected at birth. If the blood sugar levels in the pregnant woman are not under control, there is a risk of the baby going into insulin shock at birth.

Gestational diabetes risk factors include a family history of diabetes, increased maternal age, and obesity. While the symptoms of gestational diabetes usually disappear after the birth, there are significant risks to both the mother and child. The mother is at a higher risk of developing type-2 diabetes at a later time and the child is at a higher risk of being obese or developing diabetes later in life.

Preventing the Onset of Diabetes

Many times, diabetes can be prevented or the onset can be delayed.

All three types of diabetes can be controlled effectively by changes in your lifestyle. A healthy diet is the most important change – eating healthy foods on a normal schedule allows your body to perform the tasks necessary to sustain life. A healthy diet should consist of plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables, fiber, and Omega-3 fatty acids. Once a person has been diagnosed with any type of diabetes, the intake of carbohydrates should be monitored and the intake of sugars should be greatly reduced.

Regular exercise is also important for your overall health. Keeping your body in good working order by keeping muscles toned and blood flowing correctly also helps your body to perform its normal tasks. It is important for early diagnosis and effective treatment of diabetes in order to avoid more serious illness and diseases that can be associated with diabetes such as heart disease and stroke. Diabetics are at a higher risk of developing many other diseases and illnesses, but the most important thing to remember is that if you work with your body, your body will work for you.

Diabetes mellitus type 1 (Type 1 diabetes, Type I diabetes, T1D, IDDM) is a form of diabetes mellitus. Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease that results in the permanent destruction of insulin producing beta cells of the pancreas. Type 1 is lethal unless treatment with exogenous insulin via injections replaces the missing hormone.
Type 1 diabetes (formerly known as "childhood," "juvenile," or "insulin-dependent" diabetes) is not primarily a childhood problem. The adult incidence of Type 1 is similar to that for children[1], which is why "Type I" is the preferred term. Many adults who contract Type 1 diabetes are misdiagnosed with Type 2, due to the misconception of Type 1 as a disease of children.
There are 3 types of Diabetes mellitus.
(!) Type 1 Diabetes.(Insulin dependent)
(2) Type 2 Diabetes.(Non-insulin dependent)
(3) Gestational diabetes.(Occurring during pregnancy)
Causes of Diabetes.
(1) Hereditary factors.(parents, brothers & sisters having diabetes.
(2) Overweight & belly stomach.
(3) Over 45 years of age.
(4)Ethnic community more suceptible for diabetes.
(5) Women who had gestational diabetes and those who had delivered a baby having a weight more than 4 Kg.
(6) High Blood Pressure.(above 140/90 mm Hg)
(7) Persons having high triglycerides level.
(8) Persons having high cholesterol in the blood.
Please see the web pages for more details on Diabetes Types 1 & 2 and Gestational diabetes.

Can yal tell me what type 2 is about???

The World Health Organization recognizes three main forms of diabetes mellitus: type 1, type 2, and gestational diabetes (occurring during pregnancy), which have different causes and population distributions. While, ultimately, all forms are due to the beta cells of the pancreas being unable to produce sufficient insulin to prevent hyperglycemia, the causes are different. Type 1 diabetes is usually due to autoimmune destruction of the pancreatic beta cells. Type 2 diabetes is characterized by insulin resistance in target tissues. This causes a need for abnormally high amounts of insulin and diabetes develops when the beta cells cannot meet this demand. Gestational diabetes is similar to type 2 diabetes in that it involves insulin resistance; the hormones of pregnancy can cause insulin resistance in women genetically predisposed to developing this condition.
