I’ve dated a girl who is Type 1 diabetic and has several health problems. It has crossed my mind that if I end up marrying her, maybe my kids would have diabetes. Her dad has diabetes and her great uncle died by diabetes as a child several years ago. If I ended up having kids with her, what are the chances of passing the disese to them?

My boyfriend is type 1 diabetic and we want to have children.

Honestly no one really knows what causes type I diabetes there are lots of theories but unfortunately not many answer. There is a new theory out that it may be cause by a specific childhood disease I will not try to spell it because I will fail miserably. What I can tell you is I am married to a diabetic and have two beautiful HEALTHY kids with him and we are trying for a third. NO ONE else in his family has Type I due to genetics. He more than likely got it because of medication he took that hurt his pancreas. Now I also dated a guy who was diabetic and he too had no others in his traceable family who had diabetes. There have been causes where more than on person in a family have had type I diabetes but doctors do not know exactly why it may be they were exposed to the same environmental factors.

In short if the two of you want kids have them. Because in the end no one knows who will get what and you and I have the same chance that one of our kids will have type I diabetes as the girl pregnant girl next door with healthy genes on both sides.

GOOD LUCK!! and please don’t let these others drag you down most people don’t know the first thing about diabetes but all claim too. You can also talk to you husbands doctor if it will make you feel better.

Here’s some info I found online but I recommend talking with you boyfriends Endocronologist because a lot of people on here have no idea what they are talking about.

"A family history of diabetes, especially in first- and second-degree relatives, can also be a risk factor for children developing type 2 diabetes. Unlike kids with type I diabetes, who usually only have a 5% chance of having a family member with diabetes, type 2 diabetics have a 74-100% chance of having a family member with diabetes." -Vincent Iannelli, M.D.

Symptoms in children with type 1 diabetes include excessive thirst, urination, hunger and weight loss. Look for subtle signs of type 1 diabetes in children, such as yeast infections, with help from a pediatrician in this free video on preventing medical problems in children.
