for your best answer, go to the website of American diabetes association. It is well informed and can answer most questions you have on diabetes

type 1, type 2 and gestational. Type 1 is diagnosed typically in early childhood, although not always. It’s insulin dependent. Type 2 is usually diagnosed 40 years old or after, although not always. It’s not an insulin dependent type, although many with this type do have to take insulin for one reason or another. Gestational can be diagnosed when you are pregnant and seems to "go away" when you have the baby or shortly after.

Actually, there are several types, but the 3 biggest are Gestational, Type 1 and Type 2. Doctors are now also calling people Late Onset Type 1, Type 1.5 and Type 3.

Type 1, often diagnosed in people under 20. These people are insulin dependent
Type 2, often diagnosed in elderly adults or people very overweight. These people are not insulin dependent.
Gestational, occurs during pregnancy and lasts only during pregnancy.

The 3 that I know of are type 1 or juvenile diabetes, type 2 which people get when they get older and usually overweight, and gestational diabetes which pregnant women sometimes get while they are pregnant. After they have the baby, they return to normal.
