Over the past week, I’ve experienced increased fatigue, followed by massively increased thirst (this is from like, drinking maybe 30 oz. of water a day to 130 oz.). I’ve been told that if you experience any of the symptoms of diabetes, especially excessive thirst, you should go to the doctor, but I’m hesitant to go because of the fact that my weight is remaining constant.
So my question is this, is weight loss usually the first or last symptoms to appear in cases of Type 1 diabetes? And is weight loss always one of the symptoms?
I don’t want to risk letting it go too far before going to the doctor if I do have it, but I also don’t want to go when I don’t have it and look like a hypochondriac.
Any clue?
I took a reading on my grandfathr’s OneTouch meter 3 hours after I had eaten. It was 118.
From what I’ve read, that’s normal for an average weight 16 year old girl, correct?
Symptoms of diabetes don’t come in any order. Some people don’t even get symptoms. Weight loss can happen with either type of diabetes, but not all have that as a symptom. Your weight does not mean you will or will not have diabetes, it is just that if you have unexplained weight loss or gain, it could be a symptom..If you do have diabetes, you could experience one, all , or several, or none of the symptoms in any order or all at once. Here are the most common symptoms of BOTH types of diabetes
Constant thirst
Frequent urination
Constant hunger
Irritability
Headaches
Nausea or vomiting
Sweet smelling urine
Unexplained weight loss or gain
Blurry vision
Leg cramps
Fatigue
Itching skin with no rash
Reoccurring yeast infections in women, itching penis in men
Frequent boils
Slow healing wounds
Burning, tingling sensations in hands, arms, legs, or feet
If you have any doubts, please get tested asap.

Well I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes in July. Im sixteen years old and last year around january or febuary i started drinking about eight to twelve glasses of water a day and I couldn’t hold it in, I always had to go to the bathroom, I also lost 20 pounds in 2 months. I was always weak and always feeling sick. There is not a exact order, and not everybody gets or has the same syptoms, if you think you might have type 1 diabetes go to the doctor and get tested.

You can make a simple test yourself to establish whether you are diabetic or not. Fast during the night and early morning you visit one of the pharmacies in your neighborhood and ask them to perform a suger level test with one of their small devices. This should tell you whether you are diabetic or not!! Good luck.

Good question. It varies in each person only because it’s what symptom they notice first or second etc. Usually, increased thirst and having to go to the bathroom come hand in hand. But losing weight will be one of the later symptoms because since your body cannot absorb any of the energy you are feeding it, and increased hunger is another symptom, it will start using the body fat (if any) you have for energy and when that is gone it will use other parts of the body which is when you become toxic and get really sick. Of course, I’m talking about type 1 diabetics as type 2 people would work the same only at a slower rate. The pancreas does not always shut right down all at once in type 1 sometimes it will do it gradually. I hope this helps.

I don’t know how the numbers for non UK meters work, but check it before you eat and then judge it on the normal standards which would be easy to google for.
However, if you’re getting thirsty and tired for no other reason you can explain, get it checked out. Even if it’s not diabetes, it could still be a medical problem.
