…their doctors asked them to do with regards to their diabetic care, while I have been a less than exemplary Type 1 diabetic who follows no care plan, diet, exercise, or monitoring schedules? As a diabetic of 30+ years, I find this a concern because all of the doctors I’ve seen over the years tell me that, by all conclusive evidence and my lack of following the rules, I should have been dead 20 years or more ago, yet I continue to see my friends with Type 1 diabetes who DO what they’re advised to either dropping dead or suffering from diabetic complications like kidney failure, etc.

I’ve been type 1 for 37 yrs. It will be 38 yrs next month. I’ve always wondered the same thing until Feb when I was diagnosed with Autonomic Neuropathy. Out of the blue I started getting dizzy when standing.
I run a bit high though, because I so d*mn brittle. My diabetic friends and family are all dead too. Young and mostly from being alone and having a reaction.
Just relax and take it easy. Don’t dwell on it. Have fun, take care of yourself and enjoy life, it’s to damn sort.

Lucky, like the people who smokes for 30 years without getting lung cancer.

It’s called having good genes. I feel the same way sometimes. I’m in very good control now, but during my first few years I was a typical kid who just wanted to have fun and be normal. Not to mention I was in a coma with BG of 1140 when I was diagnosed. I’ve since looked over my shoulder thinking I’m going to start paying for that soon, but so far so good. I did have one brief period where they thought my kidneys were leaking a little protein, but all tests since have come back negative. I’m dealing with a frozen shoulder this month, but treatment is going well and I should be good as new in a month or two. I feel extremely lucky and I’m sure you do, too. I worry for you that you aren’t monitoring. My BG’s are out of range a fair amount, but with frequent testing I’m at least able to correct it quickly and not let it fester in my system.
