I’ve had juvenile diabetes since I was 11. People who’ve recently been diagnosed with type 2 usually compare themselves to people who make NO insulin and cannot control theirs with DIET and EXERCISE. It seems to bother me quite a bit, as there are only 3 million people with type 1 in the US and an estimated 150 million people with type 2.

YES! I have Type 1 Diabetes and constantly peopl mix them up and think that it is the same as type 2. Sometimes my friend (also type 1 diabetic) and I will say that we are pancreaticly challenged to avoid the confusion. But I totally understand your frustration.

EDIT: Some of the people that answered do not understand that type 1 is not just being insulin dependant. Type 1 is when your pancreas stops producing the insulin. I know some type 2 diabetics who are on insulin, but that does NOT make them type 1…they are still type 2! For those who do not understand….google it or something…i cannot stand this mix up any longer

One of my close friends has diabetes. Type 1 is just different than Type 2. Both can really mess you up and have to be managed. With both you can plan out a diet and lifestyle that includes some sugar and junk food (with Type 1, it just takes more planning) and do things like drink or go camping or whatever random thing you want to.

doesnt bother me..i first got diabetes (type 2) about 21 years ago when i was pregnant…it went away and came back about a year later…now i am insulin dependent (type 1)…to me diabetes is diabetes..we both have to be careful..take care of ourselves..etc

Yes, it’s maddening. Not just in itself but the lack of awareness/education overall is a real shame.

What I find personally offensive is the assumption that I must’ve fed my daughter chocolate cake for breakfast with coca cola chasers, sentencing her to a life of diabetes. We get looks from total strangers while I’m checking her sugar or talking to her pump… empathy for Gina, disgusted daggers at me.

yes, it does tend to bother me. people don’t understand it because most of the stuff you hear in the media about diabetes is type 2, so people assume anyone who has diabetes has type 2. they say things like…well if you weren’t overweight (for us type 1′s who are) you wouldn’t have gotten this, or you can’t have a small piece of candy because of your diabetes. both of these things being untrue. so yes. i completely agree with you. it can be frustrating.

I have a different perspective on this because my situation is very different. I was thought to be a Type 2 at first and diet and exercise DID work for me for a short time. My doctor never bothered to do any testing to specify which type I was because I have a family history of Type 2. BUT he failed to realize that there are also Type 1s in my family and I DO have autoimmune disease. So, I am not a Type 2 exactly but I am not a typical Type 1 either. I am also not super thin, though I am very active and eat fairly well. I get frustrated when people insist that I am a Type 2 or a Type 1 because I fall in the middle somewhere. My new doctor calls me a Type 1.5. All I know is this: I cannot survive without insulin and one bad site on my pump has me soaring into the 300s. Also, any reaction by my immune system creates havoc with my glucose control. I am basically an autoimmune mess and diabetes seems to be one more side effect of that.

We all need to step back and take a look at the much bigger picture and realize we are all here for a short time and labels really don’t matter much.

    I am a type 1. I personally don’t care if people compare.

My sister is a different story. She’s a type 1 also- she gets all pissy when people even refer to themselves as "diabetic" when they are type 2. It’s stupid, really.

Neither of us is more special than the other. You’re not "more" diabetic than a type 2. Having Type 1 is not some elite social club in which the Type 2′s are posers or wannabes. This is how some people make it out to be.

The truth of the matter is that the vast majority of Type 2′s end up insulin dependant within 10-15 years of diagnosis. Are they allowed membership into our secret clubhouse once they are insulin dependant like we are?

To be honest, it does bother me a little… But the one thing that REALLY bothers me is when commercials on TV or something similar say something like, "This and this can lead to diabetes!"… They really should specify that they’re talking about TYPE 2 diabetes…
