I’m doing some research.
Can you develop Type 1 Diabetes?

Is it a genetic defect or can you develop it from something like poor diet, anemia, or some kind of deficiency. I know it is probably not from anemia but what kind of things can lead to you developing Type 1 Diabetes.

Thank you for your help :-)
I don’t *have* Diabetes I am just researching it.
Also: Can you develop HYPOGLYCEMIA or are you born with it? http://uk.answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20090319124349AAn8bIH

Type one is genetic but you are not "born with it." You are born with the genetic tendency to develop type one diabetes, but something triggers the immune response to attack your beta cells. Stress, illness, or even environmental factors are thought to cause the initial immune response, but the immediate cause is not known. It is not caused by poor diet or lifestyle choices. People develop type 1 at all ages, from infancy to adulthood, although most cases are diagnosed in children or teens.

Diabetes is a chronic condition in which the body produces too little insulin or can’t use available insulin efficiently. Insulin is a hormone vital to helping the body use digested food for growth and energy.

An estimated 23.6 million Americans (approximately eight percent of the population) have diabetes, and about 1.6 million more aged 20 or older were diagnosed with the disorder in 2007, according to the American Diabetes Association.

No, you can develop type 2 later in life. Type 1 is something your born with.
type 2 is usually caused by insulin resistance whereas type 1 is when you are not producing enough insulin.
type 1 is more serious and usually needs doses of insulin injected whereas type 2 can be controlled by a lower sugar diet.

so basically, you are born with Type 1. Type 2 is generally developed by human factors i.e obesity

Type 1 diabetes is never due to diet, anemia or lack of exercise. It is due to damage or disease to the pancreas. The pancreas is either removed or damaged to where it does not function.

Type 1 Diabetes is a polygenic disease, meaning many different genes contribute to its expression. Depending on locus or combination of loci, it can be dominant, recessive, or somewhere in between. The strongest gene, IDDM1, is located in the MHC Class II region on chromosome 6, at staining region 6p21. This is believed to be responsible for the histocompatibility disorder characteristic of type 1: Insulin-producing pancreas cells (beta cells) display improper antigens to T Cells. This eventually leads to the production of antibodies that attack these beta cells. Weaker genes are also located on chromosomes 11 and 18.

Environmental factors can strongly influence expression of type 1. A study showed that for identical twins, when one twin had type 1 diabetes, the other twin only had type 1 30-50% of the time. Despite having the exact same genome, one twin had the disease, where the other did not; this shows that environmental factors, in addition to genetic factors, can influence disease prevalence.

BUT, I KNOW WHY YOU ARE ASKING! Don’t worry! You are OK! We all have our days off!

    Hope that made you better!

You can be born with it, but it can also develop over years. Like I was diagnosed when I was 16. No other things really contribute to it’s onset, besides your pancreas failing to produce the cells that make insulin to keep your blood sugars within normal range. It can be genetic, but you could end up being the only one in your family with it, like me. As far as hypoglycemia, anybody can get it. You don’t have to be a diabetic to get low blood sugar. You can get low just from going a whole day without eating, but it doesn’t mean your diabetic. As soon as you eat, you’ll be fine.
