diabetes is a disease in which the body does not produce or properly use insulin. Type 1 diabetes results from the bodys failure to produce insulin, the hormone that ‘unlocks’ the cells of the body, alowing glucose to enter and fuel them. what could be malfunctioning in the cell that would cause this form of diabetes?

no need for a full blown answer if you do not want to.
notes to understand it better would be appreciated, make it basic please and to the point. what is malfunctioning? i can do the rest, im not lazy like other people, just want to udnerstand it more so i am more confident in what i am writing.
i believe david h is right, please give answers on both viewpoints, yours and what he thinks of what my instructor wants.

Diabetes mellitus type 1, also called type 1 Diabetes is caused when the beta cells of the panceas are destroyed (it is an autoimmune disiese). The main thing Insulin does is control blood sugar by causing the fat cells to store excess sugars when there is too much and to release sugars when there isn’t enough.

Your question is what causes it so the short answer: your body killed the cell that makes insulin.

    According to this:

The cause of type 1 diabetes is unknown, but it is believed that genetic and environmental factors (possibly viruses) may be involved. The body’s immune system attacks and destroys the insulin producing cells in the pancreas. Insulin allows glucose to enter the cells of the body to provide energy.

When glucose cannot enter the cells, it builds up in the blood and the body’s cells literally starve to death. People with type 1 diabetes must take daily insulin injections and regularly monitor their blood sugar levels.

So the answer might need to be modified because this says that it is caused by the immune system attacking the insulin producing cells.

Try reading this, maybe it will help, i am by no means an expert.

I don’t think your instructor wants you to give the real cause for type I diabetes. He/she wants you to assume that a malfunction in the cell causes it, and then talk about what systems could be malfunctioning.

The insulin gene itself might be mutated, causing the cell to fail to produce insulin. The gene for a receptor on the insulin producing cell might be damaged so that the cell fails to produce insulin when it’s supposed to. Some signal protein that is involved in the cascade that activates the insulin gene might be damaged. Some gene involved in the excretion of the insulin from the cell might be damaged.

My understanding is that type I diabetes isn’t caused by any of these things. But if it was caused by a malfunction in the insulin producing cells, these would be some likely culprits.

It’s not IN a cell. Insulin is made in your pancreas by groups of cells called the Islets of Langerhans. These may die off for some reason, like old age, or just conk out.

Insulin, simply, gets glucose out of your blood and into your cells. No insulin and your cells can’t respire.
