My partner has Type 1 diabetes (the insulin dependent -non lifestyle dependent sort) and we are planning on having a child. Is this hereditary and is there anything that can be done to stop or lower the chances of it being passed down?

Amount the various factors for Diabetes Type 1, hereditary reasons are also one of the factor but this can not be ATTRIBUTED FULLY TO DIABETES.

I’ve had type 1 (insulin dependent) Diabetes for almost 10 years and I was wondering if any one had information on alternative therapies. I understand they are doing Islet of Langerhans Transplants in UK, but does anyone have any personal stories or good site to explore the alternatives.

All of the folks that I know who have diabetes (insulin dependent) are obese. They are not just a few pounds over, but rather at very unhealthy weights. Is this normal?

Short answer:

Type I- NO

Type II-YES – a combination of genetics and insulin resistance causes the pancreas to slow production of insulin and sometimes stop producing.

I am an Insulin dependent Diabetic. When I give my self injections, quite often the injection site would bleed out a portion of the formula. Does this mean I did not get my full dose? Do you know any tricks to keep it from doing this? If it does this should I take another shot?

You probably did not get the full dose, but dont’ give yourself another because you don’t know how much leaked out.

One trick is to put the needle under the skin at an angle to the skin a little ways, rather than just straight in perpendicularly. Then inject before drawing back. The effect will be that you’ve deposited your insulin under the skin a ways, and not directly under your injection site, so it’s less likely to leak out.

I am a 41 year old male who has hypothryoid, insulin-dependent diabetes, and little energy. My thyroid levels are all in the normal range, and I am getting better control of my blood sugars, but am having a difficult time keeping the weight off. I am 5’11" and weigh about 185-190. Would like to be around 170-175. I lift weights, do moderate cardio, and have a lower fat diet. Any ideas/suggestions would be most appreciated.

The only effective way to lose weight is to consume fewer calories than you eat. However, in trying to manage your glucose levels using only insulin, you are missing several other hormones that normally exist in the body, most notably amylin (another hormone which is produced by the beta cells). There is now a synthetic version of amylin, although most people find that reducing their insulin dosage by increased exercise and/or reduced carbohydrate consumption is often as effective.

Choose one:
a) is associated with a deficiency of signal transduction.

b) can be treated with injections of ghrelin.

c) is associated with a deficiency of pancreatic ?-cells.

It doesn’t turn into Diabetes Type 1, but you could have diabetes type II which eventually requires insulin. Don’t feel badly if this happens, since it is sometimes a natural progression of Diabetes. As one gets older, the pancreatic islet cells make less and less insulin and sometimes people then require insulin shots to maintain blood sugar. Nowadays people are diagnosed with type II diabetes earlier in life, therefore have the disease longer.

My mom’s Dr told her she was diabetic and should be on insulin. ( this was when she was in the hospital for surgery) They sent her home with an accucheck and she had’t checked it.She hasn’t had any insulin since she left the hospital 2 weeks ago. I checked it yesterday before she ate but after some juice and it was 98, I checked it today after she got up and it was 73. I checked it about an hour after she ate and it was 93 ( I know, a little soon to check it but not much) I know the normal range is btween 80-120. I’m just not that familiar with the insulin dependant one. It just seems fine to me, and she doesn’t have the symptoms.
Any input would be appreciated!

did they check her HbA1C? thats a long term sugar check which is usually cherry on the top for diagnosis. maybe you should talk to the doctor again, there may have been some facts mixed up. her sugars sound normal and believe me if she was not producing insulin she would be getting very ill. I also find it highly unlikely a doctor would let her leave without a prescription for insulin and explaining how to use the needles, how much to take etc…
so i think a phone call to the doc is in order!!!
