All diabetics have to watch their diets. No matter what type of diabetes they have. No, it is not wise to eat what you want or as much as you want and then use more insulin. This is poor control and can lead to weight gain and other problems. I had this problem with my daughter when she was in school. Peer pressure was awful. We went to a nutritionist and put the subject to rest. She set my daughter straight. We also went to diabetic ed. classes together, and we both learned at the same time. This is something you need to do with your son. Don’t let him mess up his diet, he needs to learn to eat the right foods. You won’t be around all the time to feed him. Eating more, or eating something "forbidden" is fine once in awhile. Drs will tell you to go ahead, eat a small portion of what ever it is you crave. This helps most people to stick to their diets. But the daily eating of more carbs and sugar than you should and covering with more insulin is definitely not the way to good control. You are right. Set your son straight. Eating more carbs and sugars will only increase the amount of insulin that he needs, and this is not what control is all about. It is about eating a good diet and using as little insulin as possible to control the disease.

As a diabetic of 30+ years, I find this a concern because all of the doctors I’ve seen over the years tell me that, by all conclusive evidence and my lack of following the rules, I should have been dead 20 years or more ago, yet I continue to see my friends with Type 1 diabetes who DO what they’re advised to either dropping dead or suffering from diabetic complications like kidney failure, etc.

I’ve been type 1 for 37 yrs. It will be 38 yrs next month. I’ve always wondered the same thing until Feb when I was diagnosed with Autonomic Neuropathy. Out of the blue I started getting dizzy when standing.
I run a bit high though, because I so d*mn brittle. My diabetic friends and family are all dead too. Young and mostly from being alone and having a reaction.
Just relax and take it easy. Don’t dwell on it. Have fun, take care of yourself and enjoy life, it’s to damn sort.

My brother was admitted to hospital Sunday and it was discovered he has type 1 diabetes – late onset (he is turning 30 in 8 days).

I am 21 (22 in April) and today he came from hospital and showed us his insulin, needles, etc. Anyway, he tested me with a new needle since he thinks I might have it. My reading came at 8.6, he apparently said normal is 5. His was still at 10 since he’s having trouble managing diabetes and a new diet – it’s only been 2 days since he found out.

He said he tested a friend after having 3 glasses of normal coke and he was at 5.6 and he tested me after a chocolate lamington and I was at 8.6, am I at risk of diabetes?

It’s 2am and I can’t sleep because I’m worried about getting tested.

I live in Australia – dunno if that makes a difference.
Ok well basically I wanted a yes or no answer from someone – I’ve read as much as humanly possible about diabetes and it’s causes, etc, yet found no info if 8.6 is high sugar level.

Yes, 8.6 is significantly elevated. There is a small chance that you may have just been hitting the peak glucose level from recently-eaten food (tests with continuous glucose monitors have shown that glucose levels aren’t nearly as stable as traditionally believed in people without diabetes), but, if you test a few more times and repeatedly see glucose levels above 6.6, then you most likely do have diabetes. Not "at risk", *have*.

However, fingerstick glucose meters are only accurate to within +/-20% and are only designed to aid people known to have diabetes in managing their condition. They are not designed for making that initial diagnosis. You really should see a doctor as soon as possible and get a proper diabetes screening done.

Type one is genetic but you are not "born with it." You are born with the genetic tendency to develop type one diabetes, but something triggers the immune response to attack your beta cells. Stress, illness, or even environmental factors are thought to cause the initial immune response, but the immediate cause is not known. It is not caused by poor diet or lifestyle choices. People develop type 1 at all ages, from infancy to adulthood, although most cases are diagnosed in children or teens.

YES! I have Type 1 Diabetes and constantly peopl mix them up and think that it is the same as type 2. Sometimes my friend (also type 1 diabetic) and I will say that we are pancreaticly challenged to avoid the confusion. But I totally understand your frustration.

EDIT: Some of the people that answered do not understand that type 1 is not just being insulin dependant. Type 1 is when your pancreas stops producing the insulin. I know some type 2 diabetics who are on insulin, but that does NOT make them type 1…they are still type 2! For those who do not understand….google it or something…i cannot stand this mix up any longer

My specialist sayd that there is sometimes a "honeymoon" period with diabetes. He explained that when first diagnosed it is very managable and that I should find it easy to keep my sugar under control. But because it’s type 1 I will most likely end up on insulin. I am finding it very easy to control my sugar, I have stuck to a strict diet and my sugar has stayed between 5 and 6 for the last week, without meds. I am wondering if anyone else has experienced this "honeymoon" period and if all type 1s end up on insulin?

You are NOT a Type 2!!! All of these answers are wrong, including the nurse’s. The poster can be a Type 1. Many Type 1′s experience what is called a "honeymoon period" for a brief time after diagnosis.

If you were diagnosed early, you will have some erratic abnormal blood sugars as your beta cells are killed off. You will also have some normal readings.

A "honeymoon" is when the patient’s last few remaining beta cells get into high gear and give out one last remaining "kick".

This USUALLY happens shortly after insulin therapy is started, and can last from a few weeks to months in most people if they continue to take small amounts of insulin and remain in good control of their blood sugars. High blood sugars are toxic to beta cells.

However, ALL Type 1′s will need to return to insulin as soon as those last cells are destroyed. We do not have a way to stop the autoimmunity yet.

You can ask your doctor to be part of a trial, there are many trials recruiting newly diagnosed Type 1′s who still have some residual beta cell function. That would be you!

They are testing immune modulation and regenerative drugs that may be able to extend the "honeymoon" period, and possibly preserve any insulin secreting cells you still have.

Go to www.clinicaltrials.gov and search for Type 1 diabetes trials.

Good luck!

A good site for Type 1′s is www.realitycheck.au.org.

Most websites and healthcare professionals know little about Type 1 unless they have special training, so this site is great if you have questions and no one to help you. Look for the "Starter Kit".

P.S. Adults can and do develop autoimmune (Type 1) diabetes. It is often called LADA (Latent Autoimmune Diabetes in Adults) in these patients.

EDIT: The role of cow’s milk is unclear in Type 1. Some studies say it contributes, some have shown it does not. Gluten appears
to play a role as well in some. However, these studies are used in the context of infant feeding timing, not in adults or those already with Type 1. Apprently infants prone to Type 1 who are first given casein (cow’s milk) at approximately 5 months seem to develop Type 1 diabetes less compared to infants fed sooner or later. There are other factors, such as a virus needed as well to develop it.

Healthy eating and cutting out dairy will NOT stop your Type 1 diabetes. Surprisingly, I do agree with a gluten and casein free diet for those with autoimmune diseases though. Just in case!

Of course, you most definitely can try going gluten and casein free to extend your honeymoon period, but I must reinforce the idea that a) nothing has been conclusively proven and b) Even if both are implicated one day in Type 1, once Type 1 has developed, a change such as this is not going to stop it.

Please maintain good control as long as you can and see your doctor about getting into a trial.

if you have type 1 diabetes can too much soda and chocolate worsen it even if you drink diet soda and low fat chocolate
if you have type 1 diabetes can too much soda and chocolate worsen it even if you drink diet soda and low fat chocolate. i dont have diabetes but my best friend found out he had it and hes not taking it seriously i told him i would help like go on a diet with him but no dice

Hi,

Type one diabetes is a serious disease, and if he is not taking it seriously, I would say to dump him, as he would not make a good father.

Think of it this way, it is critical to change the oil on your car every 4,000 – 5,000 miles – it is called preventative maintenance. If you ignore it for years, the engine will need replacement every 40,000 miles or so, perhaps a shorter length if the engine runs out of oil.

Diabetes is much more critical than car maintenance, and if he is not taking it seriously, then he will not make a good father for any children, as they will not have him around in 30 years.

I suggest that you read these two books. And then try to get him to take some of the diet suggestions in the books. Strict adherence to this diet is not a requirement, yet following the diet more than 75% of the time will see the need for less medications, and then he will start to feel better, and probably have much more energy too.

It would be really boring to follow the diet each day, and never take a treat every once in a while.

Dr. Barnard’s Program for Reversing Diabetes.

The PH Miracle for Diabetes. By Dr. Young.

Dr. Young writes that eating a more acidic diet can cause problems with a diabetic, and might even be a root cause to why so many have diabetes these days. Soft drinks are very acidic, and should stop drinking them – even diet ones that have artificial sweeteners that make it even worse.

Dr. Barnard writes that he used to recommend his diet plan, and the people resisted, until he had documented results of trials with patients that showed they could reduce medication in some cases by 50%, lose weight, and see their cholesterol improve as well.

The last time I drank a soft drink, I got muscle cramps within about 30 minutes. I don’t think I will ever have another soft drink. I used to get the 44 ounce soft drinks, eat at Taco Bell, and refill the cup before leaving, so I could drink another quart on the way home.

Now I only drink 9.5 PH water. It keeps you from getting muscle cramps, and it assists in raising the PH of the body, and that seems to make the insulin work more effectively in a diabetic.

I also suggest that you both give up using artificial sweeteners as much as practical. I would not search a product label to make sure it has no artificial sweeteners, but would not buy diet products that includes some sort of artificial sweeteners.

Also try to avoid eating to much cheese. This has a high concentration of animal fats. While a small amount in a bit of food is OK, I would not recommend eating chunks of cheese, and would skip a cheese sandwich, as it contains a little to much animal fats.

I know – Nachos is one of my favorite foods – but I want to eat healthier now too. A taco with some cheese is still OK to me, but not more than a certain amount each day.

You might want to watch this video of a diabetic patient that did not control his diet to well, and this can lead to poor circulation to the toes, and to the gangrene that this guy had. Note that he reduced his diabetes medication in one month from 16 units to only 10 because he was eating better and drinking alkaline water.

Good Luck!
